Troop 10151 Birthday in a Bag Silver Award Project for Kids in Distress
Children in Foster Care don’t always get to celebrate their birthdays. We wanted to help Kids In Distress by donating supplies for a birthday celebration. Collection items include: napkins, streamers, candles, a “Happy Birthday” wall banner sign, a “Happy Birthday” candle, balloons, a large gift bag and a $20 gift card for Publix, Walmart or Target to help cover the cost of cupcakes or a small present. The group delivered their 37 completed bags and extra supplies to Kids In Distress in early September. They had a memorable visit with some of the residents. We also created a video educating individuals on their project. Below is a link to the Birthday in a Bag SWAP video. We also created the PowerPoint presentation kinked below as our scrapbook. Additionally, we created a Birthday in a Bag donation program for students looking to earn community service hours through donations. Girls, troops and other organizations can collect and donate items to create a Birthday in a Bag for foster children. Adults can assign hours based on donations: one complete bag or one $20 gift card can earn a student five community service hours. Troops may use the forms linked below to sign off on those community service hours for Broward County Public Schools. We plan to collect items through our Service Unit on an ongoing basis. We will collect throughout the year and perhaps make an annual bag packing event for our troops, much like Operation Christmas Child. We are also working with Kids in Distress to have the collection items added to their website so the general public can continue donating birthday items. Kids in Distress has also hosted troop meetings and would love to have Girl Scouts run events at their facilities for the kids they service. There are many opportunities for community service projects with them. |
Troop 10269 is collecting Pop Tabs for Ronald McDonald House
Troop 10269 is collecting any aluminum 'pop tab' (including tabs from soup, beer, tuna cans, etc.) for Ronald McDonald House. The tabs are recycled and turned into valuable funds to help Ronald McDonald House initiatives. Contact Michelle Craig for more information: [email protected] or 954-649-6202. CORAL SPRINGS LITTLE FREE LIBRARY
The City of Coral Springs has launched its second Little Free Library located at the back parking lot of City Hall, located at 9551 W. Sample Road. The wooden box is now available for anyone to donate and borrow books. The first library, built and donated by Michelle Faerman and her family, was installed at Mullins Park behind Volunteer Services. These boxes are designed to work as a free book exchange and promote literacy. Anyone can take a book, and in return simply leave another book in its place or return it shortly thereafter. “We have a steady flow of traffic to our Little Free Library behind Volunteer Services, with a lot of children visiting and leaving us notes that they are so happy that we have this for them,” Volunteer Coordinator Kim Sanecki said. If you’d like to donate a book that is in good condition, whether it be adult or children’s books, feel free to drop them off at any Little Free Library around town. Local Service Projects:
